CHAPTER NINE

The sun shone down on Starfall Park, warm but not too hot for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Claire smiled as she watched Ryan chase Amelia and Hugo around the grassy field; their laughter filled the air. After their picnic of sandwiches and crisps, they ventured down to the duck pond, tossing their leftover crusts to the ducklings trailing behind their mothers.

Back at the flat, they baked—and burnt—chocolate-chip cookies and played board games late into the evening. Seeing the children with their chocolatey smiles fighting over Monopoly, Claire couldn’t deny that their lazy Sundays together had become her favourite day of the week.

On Monday morning, after replying to a message from Ryan that she’d pick the kids up from school later, her father walked in wearing his green polo uniform. Over cups of fresh coffee, Alan revealed that Sarah’s condition was still critical but stable. The doctors said she wouldn’t be well enough for questioning anytime soon.

“I’m going to pop into the garden centre today to have a chat with Bernard if he’s out on bail,” Alan said. “And I’ll try speaking with Tom and Hayley too, to see if I can learn anything more about Nigella.”

Claire nodded, stirring sugar into her coffee. Her phone buzzed with an incoming text:
